Tatsat Banerjee

A Formal Introduction

///A few parts of the website (including the homepage) are really outdated at this point. I intend to update everything sometime soon.///

Welcome! Welcome to my official homepage!

I am Tatsat Banerjee. Currently, I am a first year student of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering of the Johns Hopkins University.

Broadly speaking, I am interested in applying principles of nanoscience, material chemistry, and chemical engineering in the domain of healthcare technology. Are you feeling interested? Great! Please feel free to have a closer look on the Research Interests page of this site.

The Innocuous School Life...

I was born and brought up at Kolkata (yes, at "the city of joy"). I have spent twenty one wonderful years there, almost continuously, before shifting to Kanpur in 2014. I have successfully completed my school education from Hindu School, Kolkata. - the institution from where the modern (aka European) education system was started in India.

Bachelors, Masters, and Getting Started with Research...

After spending long time (1999 to 2010, to be precise) there, I joined the Department of Chemical Engineering of Jadavpur University (JU) in 2010 as a bachelor student. Subsequently, in the summers of 2012 and 2013, I was at IIT Kanpur under two SURGE programs, to ponder over the directed self-assembly of nanoparticles and three dimentional photonic crystals, under the guidance of Prof. Sri Sivakumar. On the other hand, for my final year bachelor degree project, I have worked on photocatalytic water splitting, under the mentorship of Prof. Alakananda Mukherjee. Finally, I have completed my Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering degree with First Class Honors, from JU, in 2014.

In the same year, I returned to Kanpur again, to pursue my master degree from the the Department of Chemical Engineering of IIT Kanpur (My homepage on IITK domain is still available on: home.iitk.ac.in/~tatsatb). This time, I worked under the guidance of Prof. Ashutosh Sharma and Prof. Sri Sivakumar, for my thesis project. I developed a "click" chemistry based generic protocol to fabricate functional nanostructure for application in two diverse application: in Near Infrared cell imaging and in photonic bandgap materials (the details of all the projects are delineated in the Projects page of this site). In June 2016, I finally received the degree of Master of Technology from IIT Kanpur.

The Present...

Eventually, I came to Baltimore in August 2016, to enroll in Hopkins as an international doctoral student.

Et Cetra...

Apart from chemical engineering, biotechnology, or material chemistry, I find my pleasure in reading, writing, reciting, acting, debating, and in any other activities that need critical thinking!

Now this webpage is basically an attempt to create an official online profile of myself, in a nutshell. If you want to know any part of my academic profile in detail, then please visit:

And last, but not the least quick point to mention: please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions about that site. Thanks for visiting!!
